Flashback: Love of Literature Clock

Because I started this blog in 2009, I feel like there are some projects that I did early on that didn't get showcased enough! This children's book clock is one of them. I thought we'd flashback to April 2009 with one of my very first posts. Excuse the weird photoshopping...ha! Live and learn:


I am all about adding the personal touch to all elements in my home. Why stop with furniture or art? Presenting today's project, the Love of Literature Clock!

Let's get started!

Supplies needed:

• Book
• Clock Making Kit (can be found at Michael's, Wal-Mart or most any craft store)
• Drill (I used a cordless drill with a 3/16 drill bit-you may need to experience depending on the size of your clock kit)
• Mod Podge
• Paint brush
• Glue stick

Optional:

• Extra numbers (if you don't want to use those from your clock kit)
• Spray Paint (to coat clock pieces to match your book)

Find a book. Think about where you want this clock to go (a child's room, the kitchen, etc) and then find a book to compliment that room. I am having a baby in a few months and decided to make a cute children's clock. Helpful hint: Don't use a brand new book. I found the two books that I used at a thrift store for $0.50.

Clean the surface of the book (especially if you purchased book at a thrift store- you would not believe the amount of dirt I got off of this baby) and then apply a coat of Mod Podge to protect the book's cover.

You can either use the numbers that come in your clock kit or make your own. I chose to die-cut these black bubbly numbers for this clock.



This option allows the clock to sit comfortably on a shelf. Another option is to insert the clock from the back to the front which would allow you to hang the clock on the wall. Helpful hint: Decide which option you would like based on how thick the book is. The thicker the book, the harder it will be to get the clock pushed through both covers.

Voila you have a one-of-a-kind clock for your child's room.

Don't let my use of children's books stop you though. Use a cookbook for a new kitchen clock, an old computer manual for the hubby's office or a family picture for your family room. The possibilities are endless!
