Mid-Century Modern Desk Makeover

Label: Before and After, Label: mid century design, Label: Painting tip

I often peruse my local online classifieds for furniture. Most of the time I'm not even looking for anything in particular, I'm just looking.  And it isn't often that I actually contact the seller of something with the intent of actually purchasing it.

My husband thinks I'm crazy.

I think he's right.

But my craziness almost always makes up for itself. A few months ago, I scored big time.

You may have seen the thrifting score I'm referring to on Instagram.

I showed up at this guys house to buy a cute little MCM coffee table. It turned out that he was moving in the next few days and was just trying to get rid of a bunch of stuff. So, he packed my car full of stuff. I happily complied.

This lovely little desk was one of those treasures. Completely free of charge.

He thought I was doing him a favor but really, he was doing me a favor. As soon as I saw her, I knew she could be beautiful! All she needed was a little makeover. All it took was a little work and a few coats of Americana Decor Chalky Finish Paint to spruce her up.

Look at the legs on her!

But, let's get to the good stuff. What did I do to get her lookin' so fine?

Step One:
First things first, I filled the holes with wood filer and let dry for 24 hours.

Step Two:
I sanded down any rough edges and filled scratches with wood filer as well. Once all of the wood filer was dry, I sanded it down to the same smoothness as the rest of the desk. If you allow the wood filer to properly cure, it will harden and can be painted to match the rest of your piece.

Step Three:
I painted the desk and the front of the drawers with Americana Decor Chalky Finish paint in Relic. Thin coats people. Don't lay the paint on thick! Several thin layers is better than a few thick layers.

Step Four:
Because I wanted the desk's legs to really "pop" I painted the legs and the inside of the drawers with Americana Decor Chalky Finish paint in Yesteryear.

Step Five:
I finished the desk by sealing it with Americana Decor Soft Touch Varnish. I love this particular finish because it makes the paint job look so sleek and smooth. Sometimes I think people equate chalky finish paint to a shabby-chic look, but this paint can also produce the modern finish that I love.

I think she turned out lovely. The contrast between the Relic and Yesteryear colors really enhances the desk's architecture. Not bad for a free to fabulous transformation, don't you think?
